How to do a one day winter detox, pain-free!

Enjoy your life!
Enjoy your life!

Happy mid-week everyone! The holidays are in full swing, which is a fun time, but can make us feel unhealthy. It’s the time of year that most us want a break from the usual routine and eat and drink whatever we want! Do you fall into this category? I sure do! Every year like clockwork I want to eat everything with gravy on it! I am not kidding! Then, I end up laying in bed sick.

This year, at Thanksgiving, I did things differently. I gave up a lot of foods that were bothering me.  I stopped eating gluten, sugar, and pretty much everything that is around us during the holidays. I filled my Thanksgiving plate with mainly veggies, salmon and I did add a bit of gravy but over mashed sweet potatoes.  I was so full from my meal but not heavy where I felt ill.  I also indulged in sweets. Yup that’s right I made my famous coconut cream and poured over some pumpkin pie that was gluten free with no sugar in it.

Then this happened…  I went to my mother in law’s house for a second Thanksgiving and I went down a rabbit hole and ate a lot of my favorite dish – Stuffing! The next morning I was bloated and felt very heavy. Instead of beating myself up I supported my stuffing eating extravaganza. I then did a one day detox that I will be doing often this time of year. It helps to give your digestive system a break and get you back to feeling light again. I am going to share it here with you today. Feel free to do it more than one day. You could do it as many days as want. Check in with yourself and be kind if you overeat.  Remember to enjoy your life. If you end up feeling heavy like I did try this detox out. It’s an easy low cost detox plan. Let me know what you think. Email me if you have questions. I am here for you!

ONE DAY DETOX

In the morning, skip your tea/ coffee and have this detoxifying drink instead. I drink this most mornings and it’s a good habit to get into. It helps clean out your body.

First thing in the morning

1 lemon

pinch of cayenne

a few small pieces of ginger root or ½ teaspoon of powder

1-3 drops of stevia

Squeeze 1 lemon into hot water and add the rest of ingredients. If you don’t have ginger on hand do without it. Lemon is very detoxifying and the cayenne pepper helps with getting your metabolism going. Sip and think happy thoughts!

Breakfast – Veggie Smoothie

2 cups of water  (more if you want it less thick)

1 head of Romaine

3 handfuls of spinach or kale

½ cucumber

1 red apple or pear (if doing low sugar use green apple)

½ lemon – Squeeze half of lemon

If more sweetness is desired add a 2-5 drops of stevia.

Add a handful of ice if you desire it to be colder.

Add water to blender. Add romaine and blend . Add Spinach or kale and blend. Add cucumber, apple or pear, squeeze lemon and blend again. Try it out and see how you like it. If its too much to handle add a few drops of stevia, and add water if it’s too thick. You can double this batch and put into mason jars. It will last for up to 2-3 days.

TIP: *If you become hungry throughout the day, sip on warm water with another half lemon in it. Drink lots of room temperature water. Cold water disrupts the digestion track. Water will flush out your toxins. Water is gold just remember that!

Lunch / Dinner – creamy veggie soup

For lunch/ dinner make some veggie soup. It’s so good for your digestion track. It gives it a break from having to digest heavy foods. Soup will fill you up and is warm and cozy.

1 onion, diced

1 head of cauliflower (or could replace with sweet potato, broccoli, cabbage, etc)

1 tablespoon coconut oil or olive oil

4-5 cups spring water (to make creamier replace a few cups w/ coconut milk , almond milk)

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon sea salt

Garnish with toasted pepitas, sunflower seeds, parsley, scallion, etc.

In a soup pot, sauté onion in oil until soft, about 2-3 minutes. Add water and chopped veggies of your choice. Bring to a boil. Add sea salt, garlic powder and simmer for 10 -15 minutes more or until soft. Turn off heat. Puree with a hand blender or with a standing blender. Adjust seasonings to your palate. Place soup back in pot if it was in a hand stand blender and heat for about 3-5 min. Ready to eat and garnish if you like. I love toasted pepitas (which are pumpkin seeds)

Enjoy!
